What Is Boba Tea? A Beginner's Guide to Bubble Tea at Home

Bubble tea — also known as boba tea — has gone from a niche Taiwanese street drink to one of the most popular beverages in the UK. You've probably seen the queues outside bubble tea shops. But here's the thing: you can make it at home, for a fraction of the price, and it's easier than you think.

This guide covers everything you need to know — what bubble tea actually is, the difference between tapioca pearls and popping boba, and how to make your first cup at home.

What Is Bubble Tea?

Bubble tea originated in Taiwan in the 1980s and traditionally consists of a tea base (usually black or green tea) mixed with milk or fruit flavours, sweetened, and served over ice with chewy tapioca pearls at the bottom. You drink it through a wide straw so you can suck up the pearls as you go.

The "bubbles" in the name actually refers to the froth created when the drink is shaken — though most people now associate the word with the pearls themselves.

Today, bubble tea comes in hundreds of variations: fruit teas, milk teas, matcha lattes, taro drinks — the combinations are endless.

Tapioca Pearls vs Popping Boba: What's the Difference?

This is the question most beginners have, and it's a good one — they look similar but eat completely differently.

Wu Fu Yuan Tapioca Pearl Black Sugar Flavour 250g pack

Tapioca pearls are made from cassava starch and have a soft, chewy, almost gummy texture. They're the classic bubble tea topping — the ones you cook in boiling water until they turn glossy and tender. Black sugar tapioca pearls have a rich, caramel-like sweetness that pairs beautifully with milk tea.

Our Wu Fu Yuan Black Sugar Tapioca Pearls are a great starting point — they cook in about 5 minutes and have a lovely depth of flavour.

RW Popburst Lychee Popping Boba 130g pack

Popping boba are small juice-filled spheres that burst in your mouth when you bite them. They're made using a process called spherification and don't need any cooking — they're ready straight from the pack. The texture is lighter and the flavour is more intensely fruity.

Our RW Popburst Popping Boba comes in Passion Fruit and Lychee — both work brilliantly in fruit teas and iced drinks.

Which Should You Choose?

  • For classic milk tea: Tapioca pearls — the chewiness pairs perfectly with creamy drinks
  • For fruit teas and iced drinks: Popping boba — the burst of juice complements lighter, fruity flavours
  • Can't decide? Use both — mixing them in one drink is completely valid and delicious

How to Make Bubble Tea at Home

Classic Black Sugar Milk Tea with Tapioca Pearls

You'll need:

  • 3 tbsp Wu Fu Yuan Black Sugar Tapioca Pearls
  • 1 strong black tea bag (or 2 tsp loose leaf)
  • 150ml whole milk (or oat milk for a dairy-free version)
  • 1–2 tsp sugar or simple syrup (adjust to taste)
  • Ice

Method:

  1. Cook the tapioca pearls according to the packet instructions (usually 5 minutes in boiling water, then rest for 5 minutes). Drain and rinse with cold water.
  2. Brew a strong cup of black tea and leave to cool, or pour over ice to chill quickly.
  3. Add sugar or syrup to the tea and stir to dissolve.
  4. Fill a glass with ice, add the tapioca pearls to the bottom.
  5. Pour over the tea, then add the milk. Stir gently.
  6. Serve with a wide boba straw and enjoy immediately.

Passion Fruit Iced Tea with Popping Boba

You'll need:

  • 3 tbsp RW Popburst Passion Fruit Popping Boba
  • 1 green tea bag or passion fruit tea bag
  • 1 tbsp honey or sugar syrup
  • A squeeze of fresh lemon or lime
  • Ice

Method:

  1. Brew the tea and allow to cool completely (or chill in the fridge).
  2. Stir in honey and a squeeze of citrus.
  3. Fill a glass with ice and spoon the popping boba into the bottom.
  4. Pour over the chilled tea.
  5. Serve with a wide straw — the boba will pop as you drink.

Tips for the Best Homemade Bubble Tea

  • Use a wide straw — a regular straw won't fit the pearls through. Reusable boba straws are widely available and much better for the environment.
  • Don't let tapioca pearls sit too long — they harden as they cool. Make them fresh and use within an hour for the best texture.
  • Brew your tea strong — it'll be diluted by ice and milk, so a stronger brew gives better flavour.
  • Experiment freely — matcha, taro, strawberry, mango — bubble tea is endlessly customisable.
